The Hue Imperial Citadel is the walled city the Nguyen emperors built on the north bank of the Perfume River from 1804. Most people mean the Imperial City at its centre, a palace enclosure about 600 metres a side, entered through the Noon Gate. Allow about three hours to walk it properly. It is open every day, the adult ticket is 200,000 VND (~$8), and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993.
Do not expect a complete palace. War in 1947 and 1968 left only about ten major sites of some 160 buildings, so much of the inner city is lawn and foundations. That decides whether you want a guide.

A private car, your own licensed guide and every ticket included, with time to walk it slowly and nothing to pay at any gate.

The names confuse almost everyone, because they are three layers of the same place.
| Layer | What it is | Size | Ticket? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hue Citadel (Kinh Thanh) | The outer rampart and moat, with streets and homes inside it today | Nearly 10 km around, 10 gates | No, it is part of the city |
| Imperial City (Hoang Thanh, Dai Noi) | The palace enclosure: Noon Gate, Thai Hoa Palace, the temples | About 600 m a side | Yes |
| Forbidden Purple City (Tu Cam Thanh) | The emperor’s private quarter, at the heart of the Imperial City | Inside the Imperial City | Included |
So you can walk or cycle through the citadel for free, past the moat and the Flag Tower. The ticket starts at the Noon Gate.
What you actually see, in walking order
The Noon Gate
Built in 1833 under Emperor Minh Mang: a U-shaped stone base with five entrances, the central one for the emperor alone, and the timber Pavilion of Five Phoenixes on top, roofed in yellow and green glazed tile.
Thai Hoa Palace
The throne hall, on 80 carved columns lacquered red and gold. The stone courtyard in front has two raised terraces lined with markers showing where each rank knelt.
The dynastic temples and the nine urns
On the west side, The Mieu honours the Nguyen emperors, and in front of Hien Lam Pavilion stand nine bronze urns cast between 1835 and 1837, each over two metres tall. Since September 2025 visitors see The Mieu from outside only, with a display about it inside Hien Lam.
Dien Tho Residence
The queen mothers’ quarter, with wooden halls, covered walkways and a lotus pond. It came through the wars in much better condition than the emperors’ own quarter.
The Forbidden Purple City
Mostly open ground today, with restored gates and corridors, the Thai Binh reading pavilion, the royal theatre and Kien Trung Palace, rebuilt and reopened in 2024. Can Chanh Palace, the emperors’ working hall, is being rebuilt inside the Forbidden Purple City and is still a construction site as of November 2026. The stated goal is to open it to visitors in late 2027.
How much time, and when to go
Two hours covers the Noon Gate, Thai Hoa and the urns at a brisk walk. Three hours lets you reach Dien Tho and the Forbidden Purple City without hurrying. The site has very little shade, so morning is the comfortable time, and the low late-afternoon light is the best for photographs.
Opening hours are about 06:30 to 17:30 from April to September and 07:00 to 17:00 from October to March, though published times differ by half an hour or so between sources. Hue is wettest from about September to December. The site stays open in ordinary rain, but the courtyards turn slick and floods can close it for a few days.

Hue Imperial City Half-Day Private TourAbout 4.5 hoursSee the tour →Hue Imperial City & Royal Tombs Full-Day Private TourAbout 9 hoursSee the tour →Questions about the Hue Imperial Citadel
Is the Hue Imperial Citadel the same as the Imperial City?
Not quite. The citadel is the whole walled city with its moat and ten gates, and people still live inside it. The Imperial City is the palace enclosure at its centre, and that is the part with the ticket.
Is the Hue Imperial Citadel worth visiting?
Yes, if you come for the Noon Gate, Thai Hoa Palace, the temple courtyard and the story of the dynasty. Expect open lawns where palaces once stood, because only about ten major sites survived of some 160 buildings.
How long do you need there?
About three hours to see the main sites without rushing, or two if you keep to the Noon Gate, Thai Hoa and the urns.
Is there a dress code?
Yes. Shoulders and knees need to be covered, and sleeveless tops, shorts and short skirts can get you stopped at the sacred halls. Take off your hat inside the palaces, and wear comfortable shoes.
Can you go inside every building?
No. Parts of the site are under restoration and access changes. Can Chanh Palace is still being rebuilt, and some upper floors open only at times.
Your own day inside the walls
Every tour can be tailored on request, with a licensed local guide and free cancellation up to 3 days before.
