The half day, stop by stop

This is a sample day: add, skip or linger over any stop and we will adjust it. Times are for the 08:00 pickup. From 13:30 the museum comes first, so you reach the theatre for its 15:00 session and finish among the palaces in the late light.

Flag Tower and the Noon Gate

08:15 · about 25 minutes · on foot

Entry fee included — no ticket booth for you

The Noon Gate of the Hue Imperial City with its five arched entrances and the Pavilion of Five Phoenixes
The Flag Tower of the Hue citadel with the national flag on its three-tiered brick base
The yellow and green glazed roofs of the Pavilion of Five Phoenixes above the Noon Gate

The Noon Gate went up in 1833 under Emperor Minh Mang: five arched entrances, the centre one for the emperor alone, and a timber pavilion on top where he reviewed his troops. Your guide starts here because the gate explains the whole city, who walked where and who never got past it. The Flag Tower and the Nine Holy Cannons stand just outside.

Thai Hoa Palace

The throne hall stands on 80 carved columns lacquered in red and gold. Out front, the Courtyard of Great Rites has two raised terraces lined with stone markers. Your guide shows you where each rank knelt.

The dynastic temples and the nine urns

Included

The nine bronze dynastic urns lined up in front of Hien Lam Pavilion
The three-tiered Hien Lam Pavilion with its red timber upper floors and yellow walls
The long yellow-roofed hall of The Mieu, the ancestral temple of the Nguyen emperors
A local guide explaining the old layout of the palace to visitors in a stone courtyard

Nine bronze urns cast between 1835 and 1837, each over two metres tall and engraved with the rivers, plants and animals of the country. Facing them is The Mieu, the emperors’ ancestral temple. Since September 2025 visitors see it from outside only, and Hien Lam Pavilion holds a display about what is inside. Ask your guide why three of its ten altars were added only in 1959, and it turns into the story of the dynasty’s last decades.

Dien Tho Residence

Included

Truong Du Pavilion over its lotus pond at Dien Tho Residence

The queen mothers’ quarter, with wooden halls joined by covered walkways around gardens and a pond. It came through the wars in far better shape than the emperors’ own quarter, so it is the best place to feel how life inside these walls actually worked.

The Forbidden Purple City and the royal theatre

09:50 · about 75 minutes · on foot, uneven in places

Seat included when the session runs

The rebuilt Kien Trung Palace with its red shutters and mosaic facade in the Forbidden Purple City
A lawn over old foundations beside a rebuilt red-columned corridor in the Forbidden Purple City
Performers in court costume on the stage of the Duyet Thi Duong royal theatre
The two-storey Thai Binh reading pavilion with its mosaic facade and stone steps

Most of the emperor’s private quarter was lost in 1947 and 1968, and a guide is the difference between grass and a palace. Kien Trung Palace, rebuilt and reopened in 2024, shows the European taste of Emperor Khai Dinh. The Duyet Thi Duong theatre, built in 1826, stages about 35 minutes of court music and dance at 10:00 and 15:00. The royal theatre runs its court music programme at set times and needs a minimum audience, so a session can be cancelled on a quiet day. If it does not run, your guide uses the time in the Forbidden Purple City instead.

Royal Antiquities Museum

11:15 · about 35 minutes · on foot, a short walk from the east gate

Entry fee included

Long An Palace, home of the Royal Antiquities Museum, with a brick path and two old cannons in front

1 photo · tap to enlarge

The collection sits in Long An Palace, an 1845 timber hall whose walls and beams carry poems in Chinese characters. Your guide picks out the objects that make sense of what you just walked through: court costume, ceramics and everyday things from the palace.

Is this the right tour for you?

A good fit if

You want to understand what you are looking at, not only photograph it.

You prefer a slow walk with one guide to a quick pass with a group.

You are travelling as a couple, a family or a small group and want the time to bend around you.

You want one number that covers car, guide and tickets, with nothing to settle at any gate.

Look elsewhere if

You are one person on a tight budget. A shared group tour will show you the main sights.

You only want a photo at the Noon Gate. That takes half an hour and no guide.

Long walks in the heat are a problem and you do not want a buggy. There is little shade.

You want the royal tombs as well. They are outside the city and do not fit into this half day.

If you want the tombs, Thien Mu Pagoda and lunch too, see the full day in Hue. Staying in Da Nang or Hoi An? See the day trip from there. Or tell us what you want to see, and we will plan a day around it.

Questions before you book

About the day

How long is the tour and when does it start?

It runs About 4.5 hours door to door, departing 08:00 or 13:30 from your hotel. Mornings are cooler; the afternoon finishes in softer light.

Where do you pick us up?

At your own hotel, anywhere in central Hue, with no meeting point to reach on your own. Your guide waits in the lobby for 20 minutes.

How much walking is there?

About three kilometres at an easy pace, mostly flat but on old stone and uneven paths, with little shade. If walking is hard for anyone in your group, tell us and we can book an electric buggy inside the walls.

Will we definitely see the court music show?

The royal theatre runs its court music programme at set times and needs a minimum audience, so a session can be cancelled on a quiet day. If it does not run, your guide uses the time in the Forbidden Purple City instead.

Can we change the route or the pace?

Yes. This is a sample day and every part of it can be adjusted: add a stop, skip one, or spend longer in the Forbidden Purple City. Tell us before you book and we confirm the plan and an all-inclusive price in writing.

Does the guide speak good English?

Yes. Your guide is a licensed local who speaks fluent English and explains the customs and the story behind each building as you go.

Booking and practicalities

Is the price per person or for the whole group?

For the whole group, from one to four guests: four people pay less each than two, and the car is the same car. Children under 5 travel free and do not count towards the group size; from 5 a child counts as one guest; groups of five or more travel in a larger vehicle — message us for a quote.

How do I pay, and when?

Two ways: pay the full price online by card, or pay a 30% deposit online and the rest in cash on the day of the tour, in US dollars or Vietnamese dong. We can also send a secure payment link on WhatsApp. The booking is confirmed once the online payment goes through, and your pickup time and guide’s name arrive in writing.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

Yes — free cancellation up to 3 days before departure for a full refund, and free rescheduling subject to availability. Within 3 days of departure, 30% of the tour price is charged because the car and guide are already committed. Date changes are arranged over WhatsApp.

What should I wear and bring, and do I need cash?

Comfortable shoes, a hat and water, with shoulders and knees covered for the temples and palaces. You do not need cash at any gate, since the tickets are bought for you; if you chose to pay the balance in cash, bring it for your guide.

What happens if it rains?

Rain does not stop the tour: the palaces are covered, and your guide adjusts the route around the open courtyards. If the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre closes the site, as it has done during autumn floods, we move your date free of charge or refund you in full.
